Osasuna partners with Moss to create waves of climate action
Bringing sustainability to football
Club Atlético Osasuna is dedicated to sustainability on and off the pitch. By 2024, the club aims to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 50% compared to 2022.
As a first step, they have changed their electricity contract with their provider Grupo Enhol to source their energy from renewable sources.
“Throughout our history, we have always been a club that looks for ways to help the community on and off the pitch. We have measured our carbon footprint, and we are looking for ways to offset it and become a carbon-neutral club.”
Through these initiatives, Osasuna is aiming to differentiate itself from other sports organisations, become a benchmark for other European clubs and stay ahead of climate regulations.
A partnership for carbon neutrality
As one of the first Spanish clubs to commit to neutralising its carbon emissions, Osasuna has entered into a partnership with Moss, their new “Global Sustainability Partner”.
Moss is a Brazilian carbon credit and climate technology platform developing conversation and forest management projects in the Amazon to fight deforestation.
“Osasuna becomes the first European club to support the conservation of the largest and most important forest in the world, the Amazon. Our commitment goes beyond offsetting emissions; it is a comprehensive sustainability plan.”
Luis Adaime, CEO of Moss
Through this partnership, Osasuna will work with Moss to offset the club’s emissions for 2023 and 2024, while also taking steps to reduce emissions in 2024.
The greenhouse gas emissions generated by the club’s sporting and administrative facilities, as well as the first team’s bus and plane journeys, are within the scope of this project.
Driving climate action outside the club
Beyond measuring, reducing and offsetting its own emissions, Osasuna is dedicated to driving climate action within its region.
With Moss, they will offer fans the possibility of purchasing carbon credits on the club’s app to offset the emissions of merchandise and matchday tickets.
Osasuna is also committed to raising awareness about climate action within its community, whether with local companies, its sponsors or the wider population of Navarre.
They will promote events and connect Spanish companies and sponsors to help them learn more about how they can reduce and offset their emissions.
“As football clubs, we need to be aware of the positive impact we can have on society. By participating in such actions, we are opening the door for our fans to get involved too so that the measures we take have an even greater impact.”
Both Moss and Osasuna are committed to transparently sharing their actions, calculations, and the number of carbon credits used to inspire other football clubs to follow suit.
